HOME CARE

Those calls in the middle of the night!! Those calls in the middle of your workday!!!

Feel helpless? Your parent with another emergency? Another trip to the emergency room? Another bout of sleeplessness? Another senior moment of what pill to take when and what is it for??

How much can anyone take? We love our folks, but what can we do to allow us some semblance of a life, not overtaken with additional problem solving?

Seniors, especially when they are related to us, put us through the gamut of emotions. We can’t be there to assist them, we can’t be on the phone all day and night, and we can’t make them all better from whatever ails them. We can’t run to the grocery store, we can’t drive them to the doctor’s appointments. We feel helpless, not to mention guilty –but what can we do that will keep our parents safe, and give them the freedom and independence they so dearly wish to maintain? What can we do to brighten their lives, allow them to maintain their self-esteem, get out of the house and still be a vital member of society?

HOME CARE!!! The amazing invention by smart people who realized that this is an answer! Someone trained in home care for senior citizens who can fulfill all that we want to do and can’t.

If you live out of town call a local Home Care agency near your parents. Set a date to meet them and listen to what they offer. Interview them and ask to meet the caregiver they might assign to your parent(s). Spend a day or so acclimating the caregiver to your parents, which the agency should assist you with. A good agency will first meet your parents and choose 1 or 2 caregivers for them to meet who they feel is psychologically in tune with your folks temperaments, needs, likes and dislikes as well as be trained to handle their medical needs. Let your folks be part of the process…they may be elderly, but still have the right to feel in charge of their lives.

We become the parents to our parents. We need to do what is best for them as well as ourselves. Try it….it works.
